The Top Ten Signs of a Sexually Hostile Workplace Environment

1. Pornographic literature is pinned up on bulletin boards, in someone’s workspace, or in the general work areas.

2. Sexual jokes or innuendos are used during meetings or staff functions.

3. Sexist stories and jokes are shared informally. Demeaning remarks are openly made in personal or public conversations about the opposite sex or gay/lesbians.

4. Normal business conversation is sometimes twisted into meaning something of a sexual nature.

5. Clever antics disguised as ice breakers and workplace humor are done at the expense of people of the opposite gender.

6. When bystanders who are not the target of a joke must endure it to avoid being ridiculed for standing against the sexist behaviors.

7. Coaxing employees to engage in quasi-prostitution–For example, sending a woman salesperson out to a client who loves flirting with women.

8. When the organization ignores sexist behaviors among managers and supervisors, but punishes the same behaviors among direct reports.

9. When the organization has a reputation for women getting ahead through sexual favors.

10. When women or men must behave according to the rules of conduct of the opposite gender in order to fit in or get ahead.
