The Top Ten Things to Know About Generation X
Differences among generations can create divisions in our society. We can only expect to help our youth to the extent that we are willing to listen and learn from them. The following will help you understand what to keep in mind when communicating with them
1. Generations Xers do not see the world as their parents do!
2. Few rely on gender differences and race to the same extent as their parents.
3. The world is not as clear cut for them as it was when their parents were their age. When Baby Boomers were teens, males were expected to serve in the military and women to marry and take care of the home. Things gradually changed as Boomers got older, but the traditional values remain.
4. Generation Xers know little about the family values Baby Boomers grew up with. Even those in intact homes know that divorce, extramarital affairs, and giving up easily on a relationship are the state of affairs. Television, neighbors, and friends give us all a taste of the real world.
5. They do not trust their parents any more than Baby Boomers trusted theirs.
6. A few Generation Xers worship the rap music, music videos, and artists who espouse anti-social ideals. However, most Generation Xers know the difference between the “right” ideals represented in music and the “wrong” ones.
7. Gender roles are becoming less defined. This means that a Generation Xer who dresses like the opposite is probably not confused about his/her gender identity. It is likely an indication that they are more comfortable with cross-gender dressing. The media has helped them close the gender gap, as well as laws that offer women equal rights. However, gay/lesbian acceptance continues to lag behind accepting interracial couples and unisex options.
8. Generation Xers have tech minds. They live in a period of information technology. It is not surprising that they are comfortable with technology and it shapes a different way of thinking and doing. Listen up and watch them. You might learn a thing or two.
9. Generation Xers are roughly 10 years younger than when Baby Boomers were their age. They do not have to grow up as fast. There is no more required military service, young girls are not expected to marry as a teen, and parents are not requiring their children to leave home as early as before. The result is a prolonged adolescence compared to Baby Boomer generation.
10. You can talk to a Generation Xer. Just listen without making judgmental statements about what they choose to share. They expect you not to accept them. The first sign that they cannot trust you will make it difficult to connect. Be patient, open, and understanding.
